Lesson 1: Affirmations (by James Dowd and Denise Farrell)
What is an Affirmation?
An affirmation is something that you tell yourself that you want. It could be a physical object, a mental skill, a feeling, an event/experience or anything else you could possibly think of.
Step 1: Say It
Two examples of “saying it” would be:
- I am so happy and grateful now that I am at the ideal weight for my body type.
- I am so happy and grateful that I have found my dream home.
Step 2: Awaken the Senses
The trick to using affirmations to get what you want, is to use your mind’s EYE to envision what you want. Practice gratitude as if you already have it. It is important to get your senses involved. For example, if you want a car, can you see it sitting in your driveway? You would want to imagine the new car SMELL. How does the seat FEEL against your skin? How does it feel to TOUCH the steering wheel? Then, can you hear the SOUND of the car starting up? How would it make you feel to drive the car? You simply want to imagine it in the greatest detail possible and then start practicing gratitude as if you already have it. What has worked for me in the past is going to the dealer to test drive the car.
Step 3: Thought+ Feeling+ Gratitude
This may seem too simple and may go against the grain of what we have been taught thus far. However, by envisioning in your mind’s eye and adding feeling to your desire, you are sending vibrations into the universe. These thought/feeling vibrations will start aligning things to fall, in the perfect domino effect to help you get to your goals.
Gratitude also helps to increase the speed and accomplishment of your desired manifestation. When you practice gratitude as if you already have it, it then amplifies the effect of your affirmations. If you started a gratitude journal and started recognizing all the many things you have to be grateful for, this would amplify the law of attraction even more. However, the joke is that whatever you are thankful for or complaining about, it is a signal to the universe to give you more of that thing. Be careful.
Step 4: Repetition Locks It In
Whatever we repeat and emotionalize gets logged in the subconscious mind. By repeating these affirmations and practicing gratitude for having already received your desired outcome, you are impressing (tricking) your subconscious mind. Once you have done this, then everything is much easier because the subconscious mind then works like the most efficient and sophisticated computer program to get whatever you want. However, doing that might not be the easiest, especially with lord knows how many years of negative self talk and programming we have endured in our lives. Don’t worry, with affirmations backed by feeling, this can all be undone and reversed. However, It takes repetition and discipline.
The key to achieving anything is through spaced repetition. The repetition is the easier part especially once you incorporate it into your routine. There is also no rule or limit to how many times you can do this per day. If you want to speed up your results then say your affirmations multiple times a day.
Step 5: Setting Up Systems to Create the Habit
Set alarm clocks. Create a station as soon as you go into your bathroom so that it is the first thing you do. The discipline comes in when you have a negative thought in regards to your goal. You start to doubt. We suggest that you redirect that thought into what you do want. Practice gratitude as if you already have what you desire. It will outweigh the negative thoughts that you just sent out into the universe requesting those negative results.
If envisioning this in your mind’s eye is hard at first, rest assured that nobody starts out great at this. You are exercising a muscle in your mind that needs strengthening. It’s very similar to meditation and is best to start in small doses. It doesn’t all have to be in your head either, creating a vision board is the same thing, just a different tool to get to the same destination.
The law of attraction works like YouTube or Amazon. Have you ever been on YouTube and you watched a video and soon more videos like that started to pop up. That’s how the law of attraction works. You can test it. Imagine that you want a red Lexus. Soon it will seem as if every car on the road is a RED Lexus.
