Snacking is something that we all do. This habit is something that can aid in the pursuit of our goals or can contribute negatively to our progress. Naturally, folks may think that snacking is a bad thing but that is not the way to think about it. The key thing to keep in mind is moderation. Incorporating your favorite foods in moderation is a key component of living out a lifestyle that allows you to reach your nutrition goals in a sustainable way.

Here are a few tips to help you deal with those cravings!

When trying to alter your nutrition habits, it’s important to find ways to make your choices and actions work to your benefit. If you know that you enjoy snacking or can’t see yourself eliminating it from your eating routine, find ways to eat things that get you closer to your goals.

  • You can’t go wrong with nature. Eat as much fresh produce as you can.  Fruits and veggies have low caloric density and you can eat a lot without making a major dent on your goals.
  • For those times when you eat your favorite processed foods, think moderation. Try to avoid eating out of the bag or store-bought container. Measure out a serving and place it in a small bowl. Not gonna lie. This will be tough! Processed foods are designed for you to keep coming back for more.
  • Take your time eating when snacking. Enjoy the snack and take small bites. It takes time for our body to signal to our brain that we are full.
  • Take notice. Is there a particular time of day that you enjoy snacking or is there something in your day that makes you grab that snack? If so, think of ways to address this. Have some healthy snacks ready when you want to nibble or have a glass of water and wait to see if you truly are hungry.
  • Eat larger meals to avoid the need to snack. Think of upping the amount of lean and/or increasing the volume of fruits and veggies on your plate.
  • Eat snacks that hit all the major macronutrients (carbs, protein and fats). When possible, you should aim for balance just as you would for your meal.
